Acrylic fabric is lightweight, warm, and soft to the touch. It is thus used in place of wool or blended with sheep wool or cashmere. Common end products of acrylic fabric include sweaters, hats, socks, and knitting yarn. Like polyester and nylon, acrylic fabric is hydrophobic – meaning it repels water.

Like many other synthetic textile fibers, the American DuPont Corporation originally developed acrylic fiber. This firm had already become famous around the world for the development of nylon and the mainstreaming of polyester production, and when acrylic fiber was invented in the 1940s, the world saw this development as simply the next step in DuPont’s rapid ascent to a dominant position in the world’s textile markets.

However, acrylic fiber didn’t become notably popular until the 1950s. It’s possible that the success of DuPont’s other synthetic textiles contributed to this slow mainstreaming of acrylic fiber; this company had already replaced silk with nylon and cotton with polyester, which may have reduced consumer receptivity to this company’s new wool replacement, acrylic.

Another use of acrylic fabric is in furniture. Acrylic fabrics used for furniture usually have a rougher hand than plant based textiles. This is because acrylic is a form of plastic that needs to be texturized in order to simulate the feeling of a natural textile like cotton. For that reason, you usually find acrylic textiles on outdoor , and cheaper furniture.
From time to time, you might even find acrylic fabrics used in a few places where you’d least expect. For instance, you can find acrylic fabric in hair extensions, wigs, and even area rugs and hair brushes.
Acrylic fiber can be washed quite easily. However, it can be temperamental – at least as it relates to hot and cold water temperatures. It’s always best to wash acrylic in warm water to ensure that it retains its durability and flexibility.
Acrylic also stains quite easily without the use of stain resistant chemicals. These chemicals allow stains to stay on the surface instead of sinking into the fiber. Once these coatings or finished wear off, thy need to be reapplied
